Meet Toby
I’m Toby, the voice, researcher, and gear-obsessed behind USA Golf Guy.
I’m a regular golfer. Not a tour pro, not a former club fitter, not someone who worked in the equipment industry. I’m the guy standing in a golf shop staring at nine drivers on a wall, trying to figure out which one is worth the money.
That frustration is what started this site. I spent hours reading gear reviews before every purchase, and I kept running into the same issue: every review told a slightly different story. Launch monitor numbers changed depending on the tester. Rankings shifted depending on which clubs were included. And too many “best of” lists felt like they were built around whatever the affiliate program was paying that month.
So I started doing what no single review site was doing reading all of them, comparing the results, tracking where independent tests lined up and where they contradicted each other, and building a picture of each club that no single review could provide on its own.

The Toby Score
Every club reviewed on USA Golf Guy receives a Toby Score, a five-category rating system built to reflect the things that actually matter when you’re deciding whether to buy a golf club.
The five categories:
Pop: How does it perform off the face? This covers ball speed, distance, and the overall sense of power at impact. We assess this using combined launch monitor data from multiple independent tests, not from a single tester’s session.
Miss: How does it handle off-center hits? Forgiveness gets talked about constantly in gear marketing, but it means different things to different testers. We reconcile those definitions and give you a clear picture of how a club responds when you don’t catch it flush.
Line: How does it shape the ball, and how does it respond to swing path? This covers accuracy, dispersion, and shot-shaping tendencies. A club that tends to fade isn’t a flaw unless you’re trying to hit a draw. We tell you what the data shows about each club’s bias.
Feel: How does it sound and feel at impact? This is the most subjective category, and we treat it that way. We aggregate feedback from multiple testers and real golfer reviews to paint an honest picture, rather than pretending our single opinion represents every golfer.
Value: Is it worth the money? Not just the retail price, but the price relative to performance. A previous-generation model that delivers 95% of the performance at 40% of the cost scores well here. A new release that offers marginal gains over last year’s model at a premium price gets flagged.
Each category is scored, and the combined Toby Score gives you a single reference point for how a club stacks up with enough detail behind it to understand why.

Frequently Asked Questions
USA Golf Guy connects golfers with honest gear reviews, gear breakdowns, and trip advice built for real players.
What is USA Golf Guy?
USA Golf Guy is an independent golf gear publication focused on equipment reviews and buying guides. Every recommendation is built by cross-referencing multiple independent equipment tests rather than relying on a single source of data.
Who runs USA Golf Guy?
The site is run by Toby, a regular golfer and equipment researcher who started the publication to solve a specific problem: conflicting gear reviews that leave buyers more confused than when they started. The editorial approach is research-led, meaning every guide synthesizes data from multiple credible, independent sources.
Is USA Golf Guy affiliated with any golf brand or manufacturer?
No. USA Golf Guy has no affiliation with any equipment manufacturer, golf brand, or industry body. Editorial decisions are made independently, and no brand has input on content, ratings, or recommendations.
How is USA Golf Guy different from other golf gear sites?
Most gear review sites conduct their own testing and publish their results. That produces useful data, but each test reflects a single methodology, a limited number of testers, and a specific set of conditions. USA Golf Guy reads every major independent test, compares the results, and tells you where they agree, where they disagree, and what the combined picture means for your game. No other publication does this systematically.
Do you account for different swing speeds?
Yes. Most independent tests are conducted at swing speeds between 100 and 115 mph. When test data exists for moderate or slower swing speeds, we prioritize it and note how performance changes. We also flag clubs where test results vary significantly across swing speed ranges, because a driver that leads at 110 mph may not lead at 85 mph.
